Settlers, Carcassonne, various rail-building games such as Eurorails, Russia Rails, etc; Have you tried Puerto Rico, or Power Grid? Alhambra is also good. Based on your shelf I think we could enjoy some great game nights together!
I hate Power Grid with a passion. I haven’t tried PR, but I’ve heard it’s even better than San Juan. Dominion is our favorite. We don’t have Cities and Knights, so we rarely play Settlers unless we’re with people who have CK…it just makes it so much better. We’ll play that online though. I’ll have to look up some of those rail games. We have Empire Builder, which is a rail game, but it takes forever to play. I bought it for my son but he wasn’t quite ready for it yet. A couple more years and it might be fun to play, haha. I use boardgamegeek to find new games…it seems like I have a few other ones on my to-buy list but I can’t remember what they are off-hand.

I can understand about Power Grid. It’s not a fit for everyone. I hear that San Juan is related to Puerto Rico, so I think you’d enjoy it. The rail games do take a while to play. We used to play them often, but then they fell out of usage for a while. Now we’re reviving them a bit. Our kids aren’t gamers, so we’re dependent on friends who like games. Wanna join our club? 🙂
We find the best games often come from Germany, especially those that have won the Spiel des Jahres prize. You can find a list here:http://www.spiel-des-jahres.com/cms/front_content.php?idcat=123&changelang=4 As you’re aware though, all the good games cost a fair bit of change, so for us it’s our habit on our anniversary to look for a new game.
Oh I know – who wants to drop $50 on a game that isn’t fun? We usually try and get at least one new game for christmas. Thanks for that link, that will help. Nov. usually has me poring over BGG forums to find highest rated games. Thankfully our kids do like playing games. It.s hard finding good games that are actually fun for 2 players. And then trying to find other couples who like in-depth games like these. We have 2 couples we know of to play with and that’s it.
