Remember how I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago about money and poverty and I included the line ‘And we have a job with a pension now, but the only way to get a raise is to get an offer from somewhere else, because even the method of getting raises has changed in a generation, so now we’re filling out applications? What kind of system is this? ‘
Well. It turns out that when you hand an application in, you might get an interview, and when you get the interview, you might get a job offer.
And then sometimes you learn that in order to renegotiate your salary, which was the point of the application, you find out that you also have to give your two weeks’ notice in order to debate your paycheck. (Seriously, what kind of system is this???)
And when you think about giving your two weeks’ notice, you might find yourself seriously considering giving your notice and meaning it…..and somehow in the span of two weeks, you go from absolutely not wanting to move to discovering a new city (Charlottesville!) and falling completely in love, and wanting to move one last time. For good. Put down roots.
So. My husband will actually be moving in a couple of weeks, and will come home on weekends, and the kids and I won’t be moving for a year. …………this should be an interesting year. I’m using this FB post from Sarah Bessey to plan out all the BBC shows I’m going to use to keep me company.
And during these last two weeks of debate and anxiety waiting for the results of his interview, I watched a ton of tv and barely read a thing.
I’ve been binge-watching Friends (up to Season 7), and I watched a ton of movies.
My absolute favorite, probably of the year, or at least until Hunger Games comes out, is Chef. You have to go see this. It’s on Netflix and it’s just gorgeous and amazing.
I also saw: Big Hero 6 (sob), Ira and Abby (should be required viewing for pre-marital and/or marital counseling. Very thought-provoking. And quirky.), They Came Together (really funny), the new Annie (such a great remake), Take Me Home (LOVE), Saved, Birdman (so weird), Wild, and Dumb and Dumber To (so disappointing. Not funny at all!!!).
Books:
I read Bad Feminist: Essays by Roxane Gay and it’s such a good book. Really thoughtful and thought-provoking essays. I’m also finishing up The Map of Enough, a memoir type book about building a yurt in Montana, but about what it means to be from a place, or from no place at all.
And I’m a bad book friend and haven’t done much outside of Twitter for these, but you guys should really check out Tara Owen’s book Embracing the Body and Cindy Brant’s Outside In.
(I don’t know why the text isn’t showing up in the picture above. It’s been hot and summery out so we’ve spent a fair amount of time at the beach, and at one of them discovered old abandoned military batteries which are pretty cool.)

Woah! Big changes. Praying you all have the grace and peace you need to manage all of the details. Netflix helps too. 🙂
And I’m so glad you liked Outside In. Cindy seriously did an amazing job on it, and it’s her first book!
Are “Birdman” and “Wild” on Netflix yet? I so wanted to see those! Good luck with one more move and your husband’s new job – how exciting!
Thank you for the mention!! <3 Congrats on the big changes coming your way. Keep us posted.
I’ve been meaning to read Bad Feminist forever. It’s on the library wish list now.
